Project Engineer – Job Description
Summary
Vital to the engineering and construction field is the project engineer, who supervises the preliminary stages of various projects. These individuals will be employed by engineering and manufacturing departments. As a project engineer, you will assist project management in carrying out all kinds of projects. You’ll have a lot of responsibility and it can come in many forms. It can range from directing a team of individuals and keeping track of a project’s status to evaluating economic factors for future jobs.
Work duties normally entail, these however can vary accordingly:
- Assessing production costs and other vital data pertaining to the project, ensuring that the project runs efficiently and on schedule.
- Reviewing preliminary reports submitted by the crew and project manager, compiling data derived from preliminary reports, revising time schedules and changing material vendors according to necessity and overseeing the quality of work at project site.
- Other important duties include disciplining any worker who demonstrates poor workmanship.
- Other responsibilities often include ensuring that all safety and legal requirements are being followed, interpreting clients’ necessities, pinpointing and addressing engineering problems and implementing solutions.
- You will work as part of the project management team with other professionals. How much responsibility you have will depend on your experience.
- Taking responsibility for a team of engineers and training/mentoring junior engineers.
- Drafting contract administration correspondence.
Description:
- Having outstanding project management skills is highly necessary to be a Project Engineer.
- These engineers are responsible for the general management of the development and production stages of certain products.
- Generally, you’ll get involved at every level of the project from concept to production and everything in between. You may also have a wide range of different projects on the go at the same time, all at different phases of development.
- Your hours of work are in keeping with normal office hours. However, they work additional hours when required.
- Your time will be split between the office and working on site. Site-work would be in all weathers and may involve extensive travel, sometimes overseas, depending on the contract.
A Project Engineer usually performs many of the following tasks:
- Managing direct employee’s & external contractors
- Overseeing project budget and schedule
- Developing project procedures in line with Company Policies
- Meeting with clients to assess their requirements
- Preparing documentation (Risk Assessments & Method Statements, Program Schedules)
- Producing test plans
- Performing Health & Safety assessments
- Ordering materials & plant
- Issuing permits
